Liguria is a coastal region of north-western Italy. Its capital is Genoa. It is a popular tourist destination thanks to its beautiful beaches, picturesque little towns, and food.  Liguria is a narrow strip of land, enclosed between the sea and the mountains, it is a winding arched extension from the West to the East coast and is one of the smallest regions in Italy. The ring of hills, lying immediately beyond the coast, enjoy, thanks to the sea, a mild climate all year round which makes for a pleasant stay even in winter. Most of inhabitants live close to the sea coast, where all the four major cities are located: Genoa , La Spezia , Savona  and Sanremo .
The water is clean and warm enough to go swimming and cliff diving. There are cute little restaurants and bars along the way. The views are breathtaking, the food is delicious, the wine’s OK .
The Cinque Terre is the most renowned tourist destination and it is made up of 5 villages linked together by hiking trails. The villages are located on the Ligurian coast of Italy between Levanto to the north and La Spezia to the south. Along the dramatic coast of northern Italy, five little villages (the Cinque Terre) are built into the rocks between the beach and the hills. An extensive network of footpaths, laced by stone walls, connects them, winding through olive groves and vineyards, orchards and chestnut woods. They are strung out along one of the most dramatic stretches of the Italian Riviera, nested on a coast where steep cliffs and hills drop precipitously into the Mediterranean Sea. Because of the uniqueness of the Cinque Terre (Five Lands), it has been named by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Each village: Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore has its own allure and charisma. Although roads connect the villages, the best way to discover the region is by walking along its footpaths and following the narrow staircases that have linked these small villages for centuries. Relatively unknown to Americans until recently, Italians and other Europeans have enjoyed the mild climate and foot-paths of Cinque Terre for centuries. The well-marked trails you'll followpass through a spectacular terraced landscape of vineyards and olive groves that date back thousands of years. Its turquoise sea washes against a dramatic mountainous coastline, and pastel-colored houses gather around a small fishing harbor in each village. Just a few miles north of the Cinque Terre are the resort towns of Portofino, Camogli and Santa Margherita. Once the playground of the rich and famous, it is now more accessible and everyone can enjoy the picturesque towns and beaches, idyllic harbors, national parks, medieval architecture, and stunning vistas. Portofino National Park features a notable variety of birds, a rich architectural heritage, and some of the most unique landscapes in the world. By foot, boat, and train, you can explore some of Italy's most beautiful maritime towns along the magical Italian Riviera, learn about the history of Cinque Terre, an area that has been inhabited for centuries, dine on fantastic Ligurian Italian cuisine, drink wonderful local wine, eat fabulous gelato and stay in seaside hotels with magnificent views. Could it get any better than this?
